Music has the power to affect our emotions and lift our spirits. It can help us get in touch with our feelings and express ourselves. One good way to use music to our advantage is by creating a playlist for different moods or emotions.
Would you want to listen to a playlist filled with sad breakup songs at your wedding? I think not. By the same token, the songs that you listen to on a regular basis should match the mood that you’re in; or, the mindset that you want to be in. This activity is all about creating a consistent tracklist to match your typical vibes.
Materials needed:
- A music streaming service
- A smartphone or laptop
- A cup of something delicious
- The Shazam App
- Headphones/ earphones (Optional)
The Plan
Set the stage: Before you begin, create a relaxing atmosphere to help you connect with your emotions. Find a quiet and comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed. Light some candles, dim the lights, and relax. You know the drill.
Choose your moods: Think about the different emotional states you often experience in your daily life. Are you team “positive vibes only”? Are you often in your feelings? Do you love to travel back in time? Or, are you a social butterfly who needs hype music to get your vibe on? Write them all down if you need to.
Create your playlists: Once you’ve determined your go-to moods, create an empty playlist for each one on your preferred streaming platform. Have fun giving them quirky names corresponding to the emotions the associated songs evoke.
Activate your inner DJ: Now it’s time to choose the songs that best fit each mood. I usually start with one song that fits the bill, and Youtube music continues serving up similar songs. I love that it also gives you the option to discover related songs or artists by yourself.
Furthermore, most streaming platforms already have curated playlists for just about every mood. Hence, you can easily shop existing playlists for songs that appeal to you.
Lay back and enjoy: Finally, it’s time to listen to your playlists and relish the fine work that you’ve done. Use the songs to help you get in touch with the emotions that you’re feeling in the moment, and express yourself.
Bonus Tips:
- Don’t be afraid to experiment with different brands of music. You might be surprised at how a certain genre can evoke a particular emotion.
- Consider adding some songs that have personal meaning to you. These songs can help you connect with your emotions on a deeper level.
- Update your playlists regularly to keep them fresh and relevant to your current vibe.
Accidental Finds:
Movies and retail shops are two of my favorite places to discover new music. And this is where the Shazam app comes in.
In fact, I always have my phone nearby while shopping or watching movies. Whenever I hear a song that speaks to me, I Shazam it and store it in a “Shazam folder” (I know, how original). Later on, I can decide what playlist to plop it into. It’s like a fun little treasure hunt!
In conclusion
Lastly, creating a playlist for your different moods is a fun and creative way to use music to improve your emotional well-being. By selecting songs that match your different moods, you can create a personalized playlist that reflects your unique personality and experiences. Give it a try and see how it can help balance your emotional life.
